Building on Tradition - NCMT Begins Building the New Barn

Construction as of Mid-May: The long awaited barn building permit was finally issued on April 28, 2009! Workers have since been steadily busy and we are actually starting to see exciting progress! The second floor was started on May 12, with the walls of the learning center and offices being erected. The builders also framed all the stall windows: these will open to the outside so our horses can hang out their heads in nice weather.

The Indoor ring is about 90% complete – finishing work will continue to occur over the next few weeks. At the moment, the builder is concentrating all of its efforts on the barn.

The excavators are continuing to finish the area behind the indoor, digging the drainage systems and the water lines for the fire suppression system. The outdoor ring is well underway with the completion of initial grading and the addition of more fill. Work on the outdoor ring has been slightly delayed due to the amount of rain we have had. Assuming the weather holds up, the target date for finishing the outdoor ring is June 23, 2009. Another milestone for NCMT!

The trenching for the electric and water should begin this week or next.

Last but not least, we are very pleased to announce that NCMT will install a Geothermal System in its new facility. A private family foundation awarded NCMT a generous grant which is specifically earmarked for the funding of all costs associated with the system’s equipment and its installation. A geothermal or “ground-source” heat pump is an electrically powered device that extracts natural heat from the earth and/or the earth’s groundwater to heat and cool. Geothermal technology is cost effective, reliable and environmentally friendly - it will support both our heating and cooling systems in the new barn. It is a wonderful way for NCMT to show that our organization is and will continue to be environmentally responsible.

We will keep you posted of additional developments and look forward to seeing you at Waveny on Saturday, May 30. NCMT - Executive Committee
